A New Quarter and Our Clasped Hands

As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding in 2026, a momentous occasion known as the semiquincentennial, I am thrilled to share an exciting development that echoes the profound symbolism of Gary Lee Price's Statue of Responsibility.

The United States Mint has unveiled a new circulating quarter featuring President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse and, on the reverse, two hands clasped together in unity—a design that directly mirrors the "dextrarum iunctio," the ancient gesture of joined right hands symbolizing agreement, partnership, and mutual commitment, as embodied in our beloved statue.

This coin is more than a piece of currency; it is a national emblem of resilience and togetherness.

The clasped hands represent Lincoln's tireless efforts to preserve the Union during one of our country's darkest hours, appealing to Americans to honor the fallen and ensure that "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

In the context of the Statue of Responsibility, inspired by Viktor Frankl's vision of balancing liberty with accountability, this imagery resonates deeply.

Just as the statue's monumental hands reach out in a handshake across the divide—reminding us that freedom demands responsibility—so too does this quarter call upon us to clasp hands in solidarity, fostering a more united and purposeful society.

The timing could not be more poignant.

As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, this coin serves as a reminder of the enduring values that have sustained our democracy: not just liberty, but the shared responsibility to uphold it.

In an era of challenges and divisions, the Statue of Responsibility stands as a beacon on the West Coast, complementing the Statue of Liberty on the East, and this new quarter amplifies that message nationwide, carried in the pockets of everyday Americans.

Your unwavering support has brought the Statue of Responsibility closer to reality, and developments like this affirm the relevance of its mission.

Let us use this milestone to renew our commitment—perhaps by sharing the story of the statue with friends, advocating for its completion, or reflecting on how we can embody responsibility in our own lives. Together, hand in hand, we can ensure that the ideals of unity and accountability endure for another 250 years.

With gratitude and optimism.

Our Progress in 2025- A letter to all our supporters from the President

          Dear Friends and Supporters,

As 2025 draws to a close, I am filled with gratitude and hope as we reflect on an extraordinary year for the Statue of Responsibility—living proof of Viktor Frankl’s timeless words:

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

This year, in that sacred space of choice, you and thousands of others chose to act—and together we moved mountains.

Here are just a few of the milestones we reached in 2025:

We permanently installed a stunning 15-foot bronze replica of the Statue of Responsibility on the campus of Viktor Frankl

Alliant University in San Diego—the very university where Dr. Frankl taught after the war and after writing Man’s Search for Meaning. Now, every student who walks past it is reminded of Frankl’s core teaching:

“Freedom is only part of the story and half of the truth… The true meaning of life is to be discovered in the world rather than within man or his own psyche… The more one forgets himself—by giving himself to a cause to serve or another person to love—the more human he is.”

At the dedication ceremony and related events, generous supporters raised thousands of dollars through on-site auctions—every bid an act of choosing responsibility over indifference.

Most exciting of all: we are now finalizing the permanent site for the full 305-foot Statue of Responsibility in San Diego County, overlooking the bay, Coronado Island, and the San Diego skyline. Soon, this towering West Coast companion to the Statue of Liberty will stand as a daily reminder that, as Frankl wrote,

“Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked… Each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life.”

2026 This will be the year we answer that question with action—the year we secure a site and begin raising the Statue itself.

We are so close, yet the final stretch is the most critical. To make 2026 the year this dream becomes reality, we need you now more than ever.

Please consider a special year-end gift to the Statue of Responsibility Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Your fully tax-deductible contribution will help secure the site, complete permitting, and start construction so we can dedicate this monument in the months ahead.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”

Today, I invite you to choose responsibility. Choose hope. Choose to help us build a landmark that will inspire generations to come.

On June 6th, 2025, Alliant International University will be unveiling a monumental 15-foot statue that honors the enduring impact of Dr. Viktor Frankl and his teachings on the human spirit. This event marks a special moment in the university’s history, as Alliant has long been a home for Frankl’s work and philosophy.

The university’s deep connection to Dr. Viktor Frankl dates back to 1970 when he became a faculty member. During this period, Alliant’s predecessor institution, United States International University (USIU), emerged as a center for humanistic psychology. The university was honored to host a faculty that included some of the most renowned psychologists in history, including Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow.

Dr. Frankl, a Holocaust survivor and visionary psychiatrist, taught at the university until 1981. He developed logotherapy, a therapeutic approach that focuses on finding meaning in life, even in the face of suffering. His work has since become a cornerstone of existential analysis and continues to inspire generations worldwide.

The new statue, crafted with artistry and precision, represents not just a tribute to Dr. Frankl’s legacy but also a visual reminder of the importance of responsibility in our pursuit of freedom. As we reflect on Dr. Frankl’s teachings, it’s clear that true freedom cannot exist without a deep sense of responsibility. In his book Man's Search for Meaning, Frankl wrote that “freedom is but the negative aspect of the whole phenomenon of the human being…freedom is not the last word. The last word is responsibility.”

In a world where we strive for freedom in all its forms, we must remember that our actions, our words, and our choices carry weight. It is only through personal responsibility that we can honor the freedoms we hold dear and create a world of meaning and purpose.

This year’s dedication of the statue at Alliant University is more than just an unveiling of a work of art—it’s a call to action. It’s an invitation for all of us to reflect on how we can take more responsibility for the world around us and for each other, ensuring that freedom remains a source of positive, meaningful change.

Strengthening Relationships and Building a Better Society

Personal responsibility is a cornerstone of healthy relationships and a thriving society. By taking ownership of our actions, decisions, and behavior, we foster trust, accountability, and respect in our interactions with others. In a world where individual choices impact the collective, embracing personal responsibility can create a ripple effect that leads to more positive outcomes, both in our personal lives and in society as a whole.

          How Personal Responsibility Enhances Relationships

When we take responsibility for our actions, we build stronger connections with others. Being accountable in our relationships means acknowledging mistakes, apologizing when necessary, making amends and taking action to become better. This not only strengthens trust but also helps resolve conflicts in a constructive way. Personal responsibility encourages open communication, empathy, and mutual respect, which are vital components of any healthy relationship.

          Personal Responsibility in Society

On a broader scale, personal responsibility plays a key role in the well-being of our communities. It encourages individuals to contribute to the common good, whether through civic engagement, supporting local initiatives, or simply being considerate of others' needs. A society where everyone takes responsibility for their actions is one where fairness, justice, and compassion thrive.

The Long-Term Benefits of Taking Responsibility

Embracing personal responsibility also leads to personal growth and fulfillment. By holding ourselves accountable, we gain a sense of control over our lives and make choices that align with our values and goals. Over time, this contributes to a greater sense of purpose and satisfaction. Furthermore, as we lead by example, we inspire others to take responsibility for their actions as well, creating a culture of accountability and respect.

The power of personal responsibility cannot be overstated. Whether in our relationships or society, taking ownership of our actions leads to stronger bonds, a better quality of life, and a more harmonious world. Start by practicing responsibility in your daily life, and watch how it transforms the way you connect with others and contribute to society.

One of Gary Lee Price's most monumental endeavors is the creation of the Statue of Responsibility, a vision conceived by Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl as a powerful counterpart to the Statue of Liberty. This colossal sculpture, symbolizing the crucial role of personal responsibility, is destined to rise on the West Coast of the United States. Price, who holds the copyrights and trademarks for this project, has fully committed himself to actualizing Frankl's vision through the Statue of Responsibility Foundation.

, Gary reflects on how his life’s challenges have shaped his understanding of true responsibility and the urgency of spreading Dr. Viktor Frankl's teachings. His childhood was marked by profound trauma—witnessing the murder-suicide of his mother and stepfather on a military base in Germany. After being sent back to the U.S., Gary faced further hardships, including physical, mental, and sexual abuse from a step-brother. This abuse ended when the perpetrator moved out, allowing Gary to focus on his education and art, and begin living his own life.

In 1997, when commissioned by Stephen R. Covey to create the Statue of Responsibility, Gary was deeply moved by Frankl’s harrowing experiences in Auschwitz and the powerful messages in his work. This connection ignited a passion in Gary to bring Frankl's teachings to the world through this monumental sculpture.

His “Messenger” monument in Iceland, which honors early immigrants to the U.S., and “Communion,” a 15-foot monument of grasping hands in Brentwood, Tennessee, showcase his commitment to creating art that resonates with profound meaning. The recurring theme of hands in his work, seen in pieces like "Synergy," "Helping Hand," and "Ascent," emphasizes the importance of helping others and fostering connections.

Here, we explore the journey from the initial concept to the current stage of this ambitious project.

The concept of the Statue of Responsibility (SoR) comes from the dream of Viktor Frankl, a renowned Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist, and Holocaust survivor. In his seminal work, "Man’s Search for Meaning," Frankl proposed the idea of balancing the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast of the United States with a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast. Wherein he quoted,

Dr. Stephen R. Covey made a promise to Viktor to start the work of making the Statue of Responsibility (SoR) a reality. Covey commissioned renowned sculptor Gary Lee Price to create what Viktor Frankl envisioned for the Statue of Responsibility. As Price considered the possibilities for the SoR, he reflected on a previous successful piece he had created called "The Ascent." The power of "The Ascent" was extremely moving for people, and as Gary thought more about the message it portrayed, he focused on the hands grasping. He envisioned a powerful image: two hands firmly grasping each other, symbolizing the mutual support and accountability that responsibility entails. This design captures the essence of Frankl’s message, embodying the spirit of unity and shared responsibility.

The project has made significant progress to date. The detailed design plans are closer to completion than ever, thanks to the foundation's brilliant decision to partner with the FFKR architectural firm to finalize the monument's design. They have created 3D renderings to provide an accurate depiction of the monument's size, its surroundings, the program, and the landscaping. The foundation continues to work tirelessly to stay true to the vision of creating an icon and a landmark that will inspire millions.

From Viktor Frankl’s initial concept to the current construction phase, this project embodies the spirit of unity and the importance of responsibility in our lives. As the statue soon rises, it will stand not only as a symbol but as a beacon of hope, reminding us all of the shared duty we have towards one another.

Since Gary's first rendition in 1997, Gary has created a few different versions of the SoR as he has made adjustments and necessary changes to perfect the sculpture that will become the future 305' monument. Here are some of the different versions:

Deseret News: Ideological Challenges and Utah’s Unique Appeal

Deseret News provided an in-depth look at the challenges and potential of the Statue of Responsibility project. The article highlighted the excitement of the project's leaders, particularly Price, who expressed his exhilaration as the statue nears realization. Two major challenges were emphasized: ideological differences and location selection.

The piece underscored how the statue aims to embody values that resonate across the political spectrum, making it a symbol of unity. Finding a location proved difficult, with the project spending a decade in California before facing numerous obstacles. Utah emerged as a promising candidate due to its fiscal responsibility and unique cultural approach, dubbed the “Utah way,” which emphasizes collaborative problem-solving for the common good.

Governor Spencer Cox's enthusiastic support was also a focal point. He sees the statue as an emblem of Utah’s legacy of building and inspiration, contrasting the current national climate of destruction. Cox’s vision positions the statue as a beacon of hope and a representation of Utah's identity.

Salt Lake Tribune: The Artistic Vision and Historical Inspiration

The Salt Lake Tribune focused on the artistic and historical aspects of the Statue of Responsibility. Gary Lee Price, the artist behind the proposed 300-foot statue, described his design as a symbol of unity and mutual support, easily understood by all ages. The statue, featuring two hands gripping each other’s arms, was inspired by Price’s earlier work, “The Ascent,” which depicted Indigenous people helping each other climb a precipice. This image of mutual aid deeply moved viewers and served as the foundation for his vision of responsibility.

The article traced the statue’s roots to Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl’s 1946 memoir, “Man’s Search for Meaning,” where he proposed the idea of a Statue of Responsibility to complement the Statue of Liberty. Frankl’s dream was to create a counterpart to Liberty on America’s western shores, symbolizing the balance between freedom and responsibility. Stephen R. Covey, author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” promised Frankl to make this dream a reality, leading to Price’s involvement in the project.

Upon his arrival at Dachau, a Nazi concentration camp in Bavaria, Dr. Viktor E. Frankl watched in horror and despair as the manuscript he had secretly penned at Auschwitz and sewn into the lining of his coat was ripped from him and destroyed. Viktor’s mother, father, his wife and unborn child had already been lost to starvation, disease and the horrors of the Third Reich’s gas chambers. Along with the draft of his book, his captors also hoped to destroy his spirit.

Day after day, as Viktor watched the atrocities that were inflicted upon him and his fellow captives at Auschwitz and Dachau, he realized a poignant truth: that there was one thing that no person could take away from any person— the ability to choose how they would respond to adversity in any given situation.

This awareness and the consequent examples that played out during his captivity allowed Frankl to redraft (in just nine short days after his release and return to Vienna) what would become one of “the top ten most influential books ever written”, according to the Library of Congress.

Later, in the 1960’s, as Viktor was lecturing across America, he initiated a passionate dialog about freedom at a time when a generation of Americans were focused on free love, LSD and other drugs and casual sex. Though seemingly harmless to many, Viktor was often quick to caution students and other Americans with great passion, taking thoughts on freedom many levels deeper: “America, we in Vienna had our freedoms; those freedoms were taken from us;” and “America, you must guard your freedoms and honor them.”

. That is why Viktor recommended some time later that the Statue of Liberty in the East be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility in the West. He thought of these principles as philosophical bookends to each other–and vital to America. As Viktor’s message of Responsibility began to spread, so did the groundswell of support for such an idea. One of his colleagues on the American lecture circuit was thought leader Stephen R. Covey from Utah, the author of another highly acclaimed book,

The two became friends, and some years later; Covey helped organize a group to bring Viktor’s passionate hope to fruition on America’s West coast–a Statue of Responsibility, comparable to the Statue of Liberty.

When Viktor’s health began to fade in the 1990s, his friend Stephen made a promise to him, to help create this monument to remind America of the price that had been paid for her freedom–a price that may well be required of her in the future as well. Stephen tasked one of his Franklin-Covey team members, Kevin Hall, to find a sculptor who could create an image that would embody and inspire “Responsibility”. Kevin found renowned international sculptor Gary Lee Price at his foundry in Springville, Utah where he presented the opportunity.

Gary, a renowned sculptor and former art student from the University of Utah, had never heard of Dr. Frankl. Though busy with commissioned projects, he took some time to think about the concept and do some research on Viktor, this interesting man from Vienna. Soon Gary’s heart was set on fire, and he became quite emotional in his research. The sculptor realized that finding the right concept was more than a huge business opportunity. To Gary, this had become a spiritual quest.

Over time, this sculptor had discovered in his very best works a theme of connectedness. He had recently completed what became one of his most popular lifetime pieces:

           The Ascent.

It depicted two Native Americans hanging from a sheer cliff, one reaching up in desperation as the second reaches down to lift his companion out of danger. One of the most remarkable aspects of this piece is the strong hand clasp above the wrist between the two Natives— and the life-saving trust inherent in it.

Gary gave his new piece the subtitle,

They rise highest who lift as they go

! And, as quickly as Gary and his team could create them in the foundry, this piece kept selling. While that was remarkable in itself, the observations gallery owners shared with Gary regarding the statue’s emotional impact on their clients that moved Gary the most. They would catch their customers staring at the piece in awe, often moved to tears.

           It was

           The Ascent

that suddenly held the answer to Gary’s question of what “Responsibility” could look like in three-dimensional sculpture. The very essence of the piece captured that moment of true connection, in the care and responsibility for one another. The moment the two hands connected, holding tight to one another, was the epitome of human responsibility for Gary. The needed symbol was the clasp.

This powerful symbol of human connection held a sacred place in Gary’s heart. He felt incredible compassion for Viktor and his experiences. What Stephen Covey and his team did not know about Gary, was that so much of the sculptor’s empathy came from the loss of his own family when his mother and stepfather were taken from him as a six-year-old child in a tragic murder-suicide, on a U.S. Army base in Mannheim, Germany.

Stephen also didn’t know that upon Gary’s subsequent relocation to relatives in Montpelier, Idaho, there he endured brutal psychological, physical and sexual abuse, under the oppressive, demeaning control of an older relative who sought to take away the young boy’s freedom, and with that, any vestige of dignity or self-respect.

Starved, beaten and threatened daily with his life, Gary had been forced to steal from neighbors and do many other unconscionable things. Even as a third grader, he wished to die. Gary had been that desperate hand reaching painfully up to God or someone to help him. After his own “liberation day”, Gary realized he could become bitter...or

another, as certain elementary teachers, friends and mentors had lifted him— and literally saved his life.

Stephen Covey loved the symbol Gary created and a team began to form. Among others, Bill Fillmore, the attorney originally engaged for the project (and the current Foundation’s general counsel and a member of its Board), felt strongly about the next step. Having served a church mission in his youth in Austria, he felt strongly that the group should seek the formal approval of Viktor Frankl’s widow in Vienna, Dr. Eleanore Frankl – the only living person able to give Gary’s design a full and proper “stamp of approval”. Gary, Bill, Kevin and a small team subsequently flew from Utah to Vienna in hopes of securing Dr. Elly’s endorsement. Upon meeting her, they found she was full of life and enjoying her extended family in Vienna.

Little did they know the miracle that was about to happen.

As Gary unveiled his version of the Statue of Responsibility for Elly and her family, showing her the two hands vertically clasped firmly together in a vision of one lifting another, Viktor’s wife became a bit emotional. She insisted that Gary and his colleagues accompany her to the Frankls’ apartment where they had lived happily married for many years–she a Catholic and he a Jew. Everyone had said they would never make it, but they loved each other until Viktor’s last breath and beyond.

Here in their flat, Elly showed Gary and his group into Viktor’s study, saying she wanted to share something very sacred with them. In this hallowed room, Gary was in awe at the number of books that lined all four walls. Elly pointed to a beautiful alcove centered in the far wall–a niche that had been carefully lined with white leather. Sitting within it was a wood carving. Elly proceeded to tell the group that this carving was Viktor’s favorite piece of art. He had cherished it from the very day he had discovered it in the Viennese bazaar, shortly after his release from the notorious concentration camp, Dachau. Viktor had no money, but determinedly placed it on “lay away” until he had enough to purchase it for 250 shillings.

With an artist’s eye, Gary looked at the carving closely and held it in his hands. It depicted a man, naked from the waist up, dirty and bloodied, staring upwards in great anguish, his arm reaching upward in supplication. Viktor had titled the piece,

          The Suffering Man.

Great emotion filled Elly’s eyes as she said, “My husband, Viktor, would often ask the question, “Where is the hand reaching down?” Tearfully, she added, “and you, my American friend, have brought to me a sculpture that answers my husband’s very question!” We are all meant to be that for each other. Now the vital task, to share the symbol with the world, both children and adults, so that they would not have to endure the same mistakes of history, but could learn from it.

Nowhere could be better for the Statue of Responsibility than "The Crossroads of the West". Utah has been known to be extremely fiscally responsible.

          The Final Placement in Utah:

While the concept was very well received in San Diego among selected leaders, California’s land authorities conceded little traction. About the same time the SORF concluded that it would likely take them decades in California just to get the permits to begin building, Utah’s governor was announcing what he’d like to see at the former prison grounds in Draper, Utah. He wanted something iconic, like the Seattle Space Needle, the Eiffel Tower. People in Utah who knew Gary and Leesa and had been following their story told Cox, “You need the Statue of Responsibility.”

Gary and Leesa were contacted later on by certain officials inquiring about their possible interest in re-locating the Statue to Utah. Governor Cox became so impassioned with the idea that he subsequently walked into the middle of the Point of the Mountain State Land Authority’s November 2023 meeting, where Gary, Leesa and the SoRF Board were making their initial presentation. Governor Cox asked to say a few words, which moved everyone in the room.“

“We used to be a nation of architects and now we’re a nation of arsonists,” Cox said. “We destroy, we tear down, and there’s so little left to inspire us. I believe Utah is still a state of architects, a state of builders. I still believe that we believe in big things. I can think of no other emblem that better represents who we are as a people in this state than the Statue of Responsibility. This is our opportunity to leave a legacy not just to our children and grandchildren, but to the entire nation. You have, I think, a unique opportunity, singular in the history of our great state, to do something big. To do something monumental, literally, to change the face of this place and the world forever, and I hope that we will take that opportunity.”

We feel strongly that it is time to build The Statue of Responsibility and to engage in the most critical conversations around this Monument and movement being constructed. There may never have been a time when Liberty needed Responsibility as much as she needs it now— in America and beyond.

In many ways, this endeavor has not been so different from “Lady Liberty’s” journey. It is often said that the more significant and important something is, the more challenging and difficult the road or path will be. This was surely the case for Frederic Auguste Bartholdi as he birthed The Statue of Liberty. It took him 20 years to see his dream, his passion and his destiny come to fruition. But he was relentless. He was sometimes ridiculed, and frequently disappointed by would-be supporters. He was often tired and alone. But he was also a man on a mission and not afraid to stay the course.

To this day it remains unknown how clear Bartholdi was in his days during the late 19th Century as to the worldwide significance his colossal statue would one day hold. When we visit her and look upon her and consider what she stands for today, the SOR Foundation hopes that we will no longer take for granted the immense effort and treasure that was required to bring her to our eastern shore.

As our planet reels these past several years from a global pandemic, economic trauma, rising homelessness, various addictions, cultural divisions, war and every other social and economic woe that besets us, may we all take a closer look at our freedoms, and may this statue be the window through which we view a more responsible world. A world where we all take greater responsibility for our own lives and our communities. A world where the message that we are all connected is more powerful than the messages of division that have created such intense pain and suffering. A planet where the abuses inflicted on Mother Earth herself find some healing influences. In short, a more responsible world populated by more responsible citizens, maximizing greater freedom for all.

May Responsibility stand side by side with Liberty as a fellow lighthouse for generations to come. May we be united in finding cures for more than just physical illnesses and earnestly seek to heal deeper wounds. To heal those wrongs that have divided us for too long. We envision a world where smaller satellite versions of this powerful monument and message of responsibility will be shared with many nations – a message that may catalyze our re-birth as a planet – a world where ever-expanding freedom is guided and supported by individual and community responsibility, leading to greater peace, freedom, prosperity and humanity. May we be the generation to build a Statue of Responsibility in America, the other half of the equation to our beautiful Statue of Liberty. In doing so, we can set an example to the world of what coming together for the greater good looks like.

The irony is not lost on us in the fact that this monument will be built on the old Utah prison grounds. Along with Responsibility comes the power and possibility for
