On June 6, 2025, Alliant International University in San Diego proudly unveiled a 15-foot bronze Statue of Responsibility in honor of Dr. Viktor Frankl—renowned Holocaust survivor, psychiatrist, and author of the bestselling book Man’s Search for Meaning.
It was a joy and delight to have so many in attendance—old friends and new—gathering to honor a man whose life and message continue to inspire generations.
Dr. Frankl, who survived three Nazi concentration camps, frequently lectured at Alliant and passionately taught that
freedom must be paired with responsibility.
“Freedom threatens to degenerate into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness,” he once said.
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.”
He also famously stated that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast should be complemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast—a symbolic call that has now been answered.

A West Coast Tribute to Responsibility
The statue, designed and sculpted by artist
Gary Lee Price, features two hands clasped at the wrists—one reaching down, the other reaching up. It stands as a powerful representation of both giving and receiving help, a visual embodiment of human connection and moral agency.
“Creating the Statue of Responsibility was an artist’s dream,” Price said at the event. “It was a profound honor to fulfill Dr. Frankl’s vision. The hands symbolize what we all experience in life—times when we need help, and times when we reach out to help others.”
Alliant’s Enduring Connection to Frankl
Andy Vaughn, President and CEO of Alliant International University, shared heartfelt remarks during the ceremony, reflecting on the institution’s ongoing commitment to Frankl’s teachings.
“This statue reflects the values we live by at Alliant,” he said. “Our IMPACT Values—Inclusion, Mentorship, Passion, Accountability, Communication, and Teamwork—align deeply with Dr. Frankl’s belief that true freedom is only found when we use it to make a positive impact. We were honored to become the home of this meaningful symbol.”

A Celebration of Spirit and Legacy
Steve Cohen, President and CEO of the
Statue of Responsibility Foundation, also spoke at the unveiling.
“This was a fitting tribute to Viktor Frankl’s legacy, especially here at Alliant where he taught and inspired so many,” Cohen said. “This statue will continue to serve as a reminder that no matter the challenge, we each have the power to rise—through responsibility, spirit, and purpose.”
The event brought together students, educators, community members, and supporters from across the nation. It was a beautiful day of remembrance, reflection, and forward-looking hope.
